The Secret to Achieving Proper Work-Life Balance
We’re living in a day and age when achieving and maintaining a proper balance between our professional lives and our personal lives is becoming increasingly hard. However, with stress becoming an increasingly prominent cause of health ailments such as heart attacks, cancer, and depression it’s ever more important that we all seek out ways to remedy this situation.
Time spent with family and loved ones or engaging in productive hobbies and other pursuits we find enjoyable is more than just something nice we can enjoy. It’s actually a necessity that is essential when it comes to the maintenance of equilibrium. It’s the key to staying productive when you’re actually at work as well! Let’s take a closer look at how you can redefine some boundaries and better maintain balance in your own life.
Learn to Say “No”
At their cores, people are social animals that enjoy pleasing other people and living up to expectations. That said, it’s easy to understand why so many of us have such a hard time saying “no” when asked to work late or agree to tending to some take-home work over the weekend. On the surface, it doesn’t seem like it’s the type of thing that would cause much harm, especially when it might lead to a raise or a promotion eventually. However, in truth we need our downtime so that we can relax and reboot. It not only keeps us healthy and happy, but it makes us more capable professionals to boot. Studies prove it!
Make a “To-Do” List
You may be used to list-making in order to see to it that you get everything done that you need to… but we’re willing to bet you’re not familiar with it when it comes to your personal life. Psychology experts agree that one of the most important keys to achieving the work-life balance you’re after lies in learning how to retrain yourself to prioritize your personal life to the same degree you do your professional life. Try formulating a to-do list in regards to your personal life and sticking to it with the same degree of precision and dedication you do your professional to-do list. This can be a terrific way for many individuals to shift the balance in their favor.
Take Regular Time “Off the Grid”
Modern technology is absolutely wonderful for a wide variety of reasons. However, it’s also making it harder for a lot of us to maintain the work-life balance we really need in order to be and feel our best. Everyone should have two full days off each week. If you’re not already taking those, then make sure you do so. Then you might want to consider spending them off the grid, so to speak. Don’t check your e-mail, turn off your cell phone, and refrain from responding to voice mails from work. You might be surprised at what a difference it makes.
Meditation is a simple yet powerful technique that effortlessly allows your mind to become calm and peaceful. All you need to do is sit with your eyes closed and you might experience deeper rest than the deepest sleep which you can ever have! It is a highly effective de-stress practice, since it gives relaxation at the sub-conscious level. Synchronization of body, mind and soul happens in meditation. You will feel calmer, happier, energetic and have clearer thinking and decision-making abilities.
Achieving a proper work-life balance isn’t impossible at the end of the day. However, it does take some know-how and forethought. Give it a try for yourself today!
